The U-24 national soccer team, led by coach Hwang Seon-hong, will play the first match of Group E of the 2022 Hangzhou AG Men’s Soccer Group Stage against Kuwait at Jinhua Sports Center Stadium in Jinhua, China, at 8:30 p.m. (Korean time) on the 19th. 

Coach Hwang Seon-hong first brought out the 4-2-3-1 pattern. Cho Young-wook was placed at the front, and the second line consisted of Jeong Woo-young, Ko Young-jun, and Eom Won-sang. Next, Baek Seung-ho and Jeong Ho-yeon took charge of the midfield. The back four are Park Gyu-hyun, Lee Han-beom, Park Jin-seop, and Hwang Jae-won. Gwangyeon Lee wore the goalkeeper gloves. Another wild card, Seol Young-woo, waits for action on the bench. 

In this year’s Hangzhou AG men’s soccer group stage, the top four teams with the best results among the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each group will advance. However, on the 19th, it was reported that Group C, Afghanistan and Syria, had announced their withdrawal from participation, creating a variable. Uzbekistan and Hong Kong in Group C confirmed their advance to the round of 16, and instead played two consecutive games against each other. As ‘strong’ Uzbekistan received a relatively advantageous matchup, it appears that they will have some leeway in future tournaments. Uzbekistan, already a difficult team, entered the competition with an early advantage.

Korea’s schedule begins with a game against Kuwait on the 19th, followed by a game against Thailand on the 21st and Bahrain on the 24th. As the interval between games is short, player injury management appears to be the biggest issue. Meanwhile, the Group E match between Bahrain and Thailand, held earlier on the same day, ended in a 1-1 draw. 

‘Ace’ Lee Kang-in will join Hwang Seon-hong after completing the first leg of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League (UCL) group F match against Dortmund (Germany) on the 20th. According to the schedule, there is a possibility that they will play against Bahrain at the earliest, or in the tournament at the latest.

Meanwhile, coach Hwang Seon-hong said ahead of the competition, “We will do our best to achieve our desired goal with all our might.” Korea is attempting to win its third consecutive title following Incheon in 2014 and Jakarta-Palembang in 2018.
